the importance of an eye test

Eye tests are crucial not only for assessing changes in your vision but also for maintaining overall eye health. During an eye examination, optometrists can detect conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration early, when they are most treatable.

Additionally, eye tests can sometimes uncover signs of general health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure, which can manifest in the eyes before other symptoms appear.

Regular eye exams are essential for preserving your eyesight and ensuring your overall well-being, providing a comprehensive picture of your health that goes beyond just how well you see.

How often should you get an eye test?

The frequency of eye tests can vary depending on your age, health, and risk factors. Generally, adults are advised to have an eye test every two years.

However, if you are over 60, under 16, or have certain medical conditions like diabetes or a family history of eye disease, more frequent exams may be necessary.

Children should have their first eye test at around six months of age, followed by additional tests at age three and before starting school.

Regular eye tests ensure that any changes in vision or eye health are caught early, allowing for timely treatment and the best possible care for your eyes.

During your eye test

We use the latest technology to provide a thorough service. During your eye test, you will be asked about your general state of health and any medication you are taking.

This helps us understand any underlying conditions that might affect your vision. You will also be tested to see if you need a new prescription. Ensuring your prescription is up-to-date is vital for clear vision and eye comfort.

The health of both the inner and outer parts of your eyes will be checked to ensure they are in good condition. This comprehensive check helps in early detection of potential issues.

Depending on your individual needs, you may receive additional tests for various eye conditions, such as glaucoma.

These extra tests are crucial for preventing and managing eye diseases. Finally, we will ask you questions about how you use your sight in your daily life, including activities like driving, work, hobbies, and sports. This information helps us tailor our advice and recommendations to suit your lifestyle.

After your eye test

Your optometrist will tell you about the standard of your vision, the health of your eyes and any individual visual requirements you may have. You will be told whether glasses are required and what to use them for. You will be advised when your next eye test is due, and will either be given a copy of your prescription or a statement confirming that you do not need glasses.

If glasses are required, you will see the dispensing optician who will advise on frame styles and lens types suitable for your lifestyle, visual needs and prescription. We will send you a reminder when you are next due for an eye test. If you have any questions before then, please feel free to contact us.

We look forward to looking after your sight.

We utilise state-of-the-art technology for optimal eye care

All our practices are equipped with an Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT). Previously exclusive to eye hospitals like Moorfields, this advanced technology was adopted early by Observatory.

What are the benefits of OCT?

OCT allows us to maintain an ongoing and precise history of your eye health. The scan captures subtle changes that retinal photography simply cannot see, allowing us to compare your results at future visits.

Your optometrist will review the data with you on screen, talking you through the findings so you can easily understand your eye health. This diagnostic precision ensures a timely, accurate referral to a hospital should it ever be required.

Who should have OCT

Everyone seeking the highest quality eye care should consider OCT, particularly if you are over 40, have a family history of eye problems, are diabetic (even if you already attend a screening service), have general health conditions that may affect your eyes, or have ever had an abnormality detected using any other method.

Who qualifies for an NHS eye test

You may be entitled to a free NHS sight test depending on your age, health, income or benefits.

This can include children under 16, young people under 19 in full-time education, people aged 60 or over, and patients with certain medical or eye health conditions. You can check the full NHS eligibility guidance for the most up-to-date information.
